SJA typically fields Middle School through High School girls and boys teams. The basketball program runs October through mid-March.

SJA typically fields girls teams in the Spring season and boys teams in the Fall. The age levels of the teams fielded depends on the number of kids that register and the availability of coaches.

Basic Expectations of Participation

Student-athlete participation on a SJA team is accompanied by certain expectations and a commitment to contribute to the team as listed in the following:

Attendance - athletes are expected to attend all practices and games other than for usual and customary circumstances that prevent it (e.g., illness/injury, family emergency, vacation etc.). Attendance is not required on Holy days of obligation and there shall be no penalty associated with missing a practice or game on a Sunday or a holy day of obligation, if one were to be scheduled.

Attention - athletes are expected to pay attention and maintain a respectful attitude toward their coaches at all times, follow directions and coaching instructions, and refrain from any disruptiveness or distraction that would inhibit them or their teammates from doing so.

Effort - athletes are expected to put forth their best efforts both physically and mentally during team practices and games. There are both physical skills to learn and practice as well as mental challenges associated with learning aspects of the sport, such as strategy and tactics.

Helpfulness - athletes are expected to be helpful to others; this includes being supportive and helpful to other athletes learning physical and mental aspects of the sport, and helping and cooperating with coaches when asked, without hesitation or argument.

Timeliness - athletes are expected to be at practices and games in time to start the practice or game at the scheduled time. This means arriving 5-10 minutes beforehand for practices and at least 30 minutes before games, or as otherwise instructed by a coach, so that changing shoes, warming up, etc. can take place prior to the scheduled start time.

Financial Assistance

SJA is supported through participation fees paid by members as well as generous support from St. John the Baptist parish. Financial hardships should never be a reason to prevent St. John's parents from signing their children up for SJA sports programs. If you need assistance, please contact the SJA treasurer to inquire.

coaching and Volunteering

SJA is an all-volunteer organization. Would you like to get involved in supporting our mission? There are several opportunities to get involved:

Coaching - Every team fielded needs a head coach and at least one assistant coach. APPLY

Spirit Team - The SJA Board has agreed to support an initiative aimed at elevating the level of spiritual development opportunity within our sports program. This is super-early stage, and it will require creativity and collaboration between SJA and people in the catechetics community to advance. Contact the AD if you want to get involved in this.

Fundraising - Defraying costs, especially for tournaments and things like extra St. John's sporting gear, is always something that can be helpful. If you can do anything from heading up a bake sale for your kids team or organizing a creative fundraiser event for SJA, contact the AD
